Scene 001 - SoCal Grappling Arts Center - San Diego, CA - Fall 2011 - FLASHBACK
*A local wrestling show, put on to help promote and support the wrestling school, “The Old Man” decides to put on a small card with all ticket proceeds going to help to upgrade and further the school. Avery Miles III was the last official student of the man known to many as Fletch; but Miles III could be his most prominent. The card features local talent, but young and past aging, but the Main Event is one in which we see the man known as AM3 in his first ever Main Event. This match, nowhere on the level of a national audience, is important to the career of Avery as it is the jumpoff point for him to be recruited into other regional shows and eventually heading down to Mexico in the next evolution of his career. Avery is backstage with butterflies in his stomach. The clean cut, young Miles tries to calm his nerves as his opponent, as aging veteran, “Deathwish” Danny Blevins approaches the young man.*
Danny: “You okay, kid?”
Avery: “Ye- yeah.”
*Avery breathes deep and stands up, offering a handshake.*
Avery: “I am honor to head up this show with you, Mr. Blevins.”
Danny: “It’s Danny. And relax, it’s just a show. Nothing special.”
Avery: “Well, it’s my first ever headline. I just, I want to make you look good.”
*Danny shakes Avery’s hand*
Danny: “Just go out there, and hit your spots. Make me look good, and I will make sure that your phone is ringing from promotions from Sacramento down to Tijuana.”
*We hear the announcer get on the mic as the Main Event is getting announced.*
Danny: “That is us, kid.”
*With that, Danny makes his way towards the gym from the locker room, and gets ready for the match. Avery breathes deeply as he jumps to get the blood flowing, ready for his match.*
Avery: “Let’s do this!”
*With that, Avery quickly heads for the entrance to the gym as we can hear the small group of fans cheer for Avery, ready to fight it out in the shows big main event.*
Scene 002 - Former SoCal Grappling Arts Center - San Diego, CA - June 2nd, 2016
*Avery Miles III is standing in the middle of the gym as a few beefy looking guys work to carry out broken pieces of gym equipment. Going back and forth between Vegas and Cali has become a weekly thing, but Avery takes it all in stride. Airports and flights becoming a second home, it is Taylor and Brooklyn that keep him fully grounded. It was here that Avery fought in his first ever Main Event; a loss, but an experience to hold nonetheless. Working on getting the Center open and running, it needs a big clean out first. Long gone are the days of Fletch running things with an iron fist and people beating his door down to get admitted. The school has long fallen into despair, but Avery hopes to open it back up and work to train the new generation of talent.*
Avery: “It was here that I started my career; a loss in the Main Event against “Deathwish” Danny Blevins. A man that has sadly passed on, but his memory will be always remembered in this building. A home, a home for those that paid their dues and did not get the recognition… and a place for the next wave of talent to come in and make their marks. I am not one to put down those that want to try, but instead of insight… wisdom… thoughts. Instead of trying to hold onto my own spot, I am willing to put my efforts to help build up those around me. It helps me, it helps them, and it helps the sport. What do I gain by trying to keep them down? If they are truly determined and ready for the Main Event, they will earn their way there regardless.”
*Avery drags a trash can, tossing in broken metals and plastic pieces from worn down and broken equipment. This place holds a special place in Avery’s heart. It saved him. Fletch saved him. He owes so very much to it, and wants to pay his respects by re-opening it and running the school. Avery has kept in contact with some local talent and has applications already for trainers.*
Avery: “Ego has long been part of this game, for so many. And it seems like my opponent is no different. Championships and successes are two things that he has plenty of, and for that, I respect his game. I respect his accomplishments and what he has done. But that does not mean that I should like who he is. Or what he does. I find it quite sad that someone so accomplished feels so threatened by me. Threatened by a man that is a glorified choke artist; or so some of my opponents have claimed. I’ve earned title shots, and came up short. One in Valentine Wrestling Syndicate included… but I have had success too. I hold a tag team title. I’ve competed in a handful of companies, some to success as well. I’ve held my own against some of the best talent in the companies that I have faced. There is nothing that has stopped me from trying, and I will continue to do so. I have seen so many people say that this match is a “make or break” for their career. I get that, I really do. But for me, this is my life. This is all that I know. It is what I am good at. And yet, I have so much more that I want to accomplish. More to achieve. More matches to be won. More titles to win. And more statements to make.”
*Avery smiles as he discovers the old “SoCal Grappling Arts Center” sign behind some things, lying against the wall. He pulls it out and a combination of fading and color bleed only allows the works “Center” to be legible*
Avery: “The Center… I like it.”
*Avery takes the picture and hangs it up high on the wall, directly under a brand new light. “The Center” for everyone to see. Ushering in the next generation of talent to be trained in the school, while honoring those that came before*
Scene 003 - Avery Miles Home - Henderson, NV - June 3rd, 2016
*Taylor nervously wrings her hands watching the front door. Brooklyn was at Daycare but there was something on her mind and had been for a few days. After her twitter encounter with Janel, Persephone’s assistant she had been so fired up. Then knowing in a few days she was required to return to Seattle for the custody hearing she needed to talk to Avery.
As if he had known she was thinking about him, he enters the house, his smile lighting up at seeing her waiting for him*
Avery: “Hey Tay!”
*He tosses his bag just past her, and grabs her for a hug and a kiss on her cheek.*
Avery: “What a flight… but at least I am getting ‘The Center’ in order.
Taylor: “I missed you.”
*She blushes*
Avery: “I missed you too, Tay. Where’s Brooky?”
Taylor: Daycare
*After dropping the bag, he grabs and picks up Tay carrying her to the kitchen. The two of them always shared a playful friendship and she knew what to always expect with him*
Avery: “Time for a snack!”
Taylor: “Before that, ummm something I wanted to talk to you about. You saw me talking to Janell... right?”
Avery: “Ugh, yeah. That. Her.”
*He drops Taylor to her feet.*
Avery: “What’s on your mind, Tay?”
*Avery looks at her, seeing her fidget a bit as she obviously has something on her mind*
Taylor: “Well... I have never felt as defenseless as I did when I was with Jeremiah and then seeing her thinking she was better than you, with years of experience. And that stuck up princess Persephone. Well... do you think... maybe I could learn? I want to be strong. Not scared anymore. For Brook. For you.”
She looks down, at her feet. The usual sign of a submissive personality.
*He places his hand under her chin, and tilts her head up*
Avery: “You are stronger than you know, Tay. And I would be happy to train you; to protect yourself. To learn how to not become the victim. And hey, maybe one day you could use the training for something.”
*Avery gives a smirk, and pulls her in seeing that she needs some comfort. Wrapping his arms around her, he holds her close*
Avery: “You and I can train as much as you need, I always have time for you. And I am sure that Brook would love to see a Badass Mommy!”
*He laughs*
Taylor: “Well that’s the thing. I umm... I quit my job last night. And I enrolled in night school too. But I was hoping maybe...”
*Avery is taken back, Taylor was never impulsive. Perhaps it was her comfort in Vegas? Her comfort in Avery? Knowing that for once, someone had her back. Was in her corner.*
Avery: “Maybe, what?”
Taylor: “Do the wrestling thing too?”
*She’s wringing her hands again.*
Avery: “Wrestling? You want to… wrestle?”
*He stands back for a second, sizing her up. The girl that often played the quiet, shy one wanted to do something where she would be in the spotlight. Something that people have dreamed all of their lives to do. She wanted to… “do the wrestling thing.”*
Avery: “I mean… I can train you. But you DO know that you need to be in the spotlight? To make yourself loud… to be known…. And people will be taking shots at you. Left and right. Look at Persephone and Janell. I deal with that… all of the time.”
*He looks to it, not sure if she wants all of this.*
*She looks up, a determined set to her chin that he hadn’t seen in years. A spark of the Taylor that the scumbag in Seattle had stolen from her*
Taylor: “Every night I get up on a stage and take my clothes off for a bunch of perverted old men for money and after talking to that girl about selling her soul for money I realized that I was a hypocrite because that’s what I was doing. If some Daddy’s girl princess can go out there and win a title in ten matches why can’t I? I am far more fitter than she is. I have to be to dance. No one wants to see a flappy girl juggle. No offense to bigger girls. I just see how much you and Levi enjoy it. I see Lisbeth and even Emma. I think I can do it and prove to everyone I’m not a victim anymore.”
*When she finishes her chest is moving rapidly, her heart beating fast with all the fire she just showed*
Avery: “Whoa, calm down there, killer. Okay, I get it. You want to be the hunter. Not the hunted. I get it. We can get started right away. It won’t be easy, and we won’t take it easy on you.”
*Taylor raises an eye, to the word ‘we’*
Avery: “Obviously Levi and I will be training you, and we both learned the old school way. You WILL get hurt. You WILL be in pain. You WILL be broken down. But we will build you into what you want to be. Are you sure you want this? Once you agree and we enter the gym, I am not the same Avery. I will not baby you. I will be trying to break you. Because if it is not me, it will be them. It will be anyone ready to beat you. To destroy you.”
*Seeing a similar fire, Taylor realizes that Avery is not playing any games.*
Taylor: “Nothing about my life has been easy Avery. I’m not just some pretty face doing this to be on tv.”
*The determined look hasn’t faltered even a little and for the first time she looks Avery directly in the eyes without flinching or looking away*
Avery: “We start in the morning.”
*He holds his hand out to her*
*She takes it, giving him a hint of a smile*
Taylor: “Jeremiah called. Left a voicemail. I almost didn’t want you to hear it.
*She moves into his arms*
Taylor: “Because I might not be able to stop you from killing him.”
*She holds out her phone to him so he can listen. He listens closely, his face showing an expression for intrigue to one of being livid*
Avery: “Boy is he in for a rude awakening, Tay. I will be going with you to Seattle. Brook is NOT going to be taken away. And I will do anything and everything I can to make sure of that.”
*He tightens his arms around her*
Taylor: “I’m glad I called you again Avery. I don’t know where I would be without you.”
*She rests her head on his shoulder.*
Scene 004 - Hilton San Jose - San Jose, CA - June 4th, 2016
*Avery Miles III is sitting in his room, hours away from NGW’s Vendetta. He has a shot to win the NGW Marquee Title, as he is also preparing to fight back in Vegas against the VWS World Champion Alex Jones. Avery seems to have a calmness to him, but he maintains a focus regardless.*
Avery: “Valentine Wrestling Syndicate… a place that I signed on with not knowing how long I might stick around or about the powers that be. It is obvious from the start that Ana wanted Alex to be the face of the company, and it has been an uphill battle. It has taken everything I had to get to the point, and I simply won’t be going away quiet. This match is not an “I need to win” nor is it one that “I will win for myself.” This match shows the rest of the roster that the tyranny at the top can be defeated. It shows the fans that the good guy can win. Even in a situation when all of the cards are stacked against you, it is possible to rise up and beat the challenge that lies in front of you.
*Avery flexes his arms a bit; not in a threatening manner, but to loosen up*
Avery: Alex Jones wants to throw compliments my way, and then proceed to insult me. That is fine. By now, I already know the type of guy he is. I’ve already said how cowardly he is. How he is Ana’s bitch puppy, and how his sack is obviously in her purse. More of the same, no reason to rehash that. The funny part, Alex enjoys the fact that he doesn’t have to use his skill to beat me. I mean, bravo. You cheat and lie to get wins, enjoy that. I am sure that will take you far. And when the day comes that you career is over, who will be left caring about you? It sure won’t be me. It won’t be the roster. It sure as hell won’t be the fans. You will be forgotten and barely liked. You can have your accomplishments and titles, and you can have Ana… but what more do you have? Nothing.
*Avery shrugs, shaking his head*
Avery: Win or lose, I know that I feel like I gave it my all. I left it all out there in the ring. No regrets at all. You can’t say the same. You have to live with yourself. And the way that you do things. You say that you will do ANYTHING to keep the title… ANYTHING. Anything except actually fighting a fight in a match where you are clearly outmatched.
*Avery smiles*
Avery: You stopped having heart and passion a long time ago. Resting your career on doing what it takes to earn and keep titles, it is a shame. Your career could mean so much. You have talent, that is obvious, but you refuse to use it. You could be a respectable champion, and yet you decide to be a scumbag. That is fine. The fans deserve better. The roster deserves better. The company deserves better. And that is exactly why I will be taking the title from you. I will become the face of VWS. I will lead the company down the right path. I have already jumped hurdles to get to you. I have leaped through hoops. And I have beat those put in front of me. There isn’t much more that you can do to stop me. Bring what you have Alex, it won’t be enough.
*Avery stands up, grabbing his bag, and is ready to head towards the gym*
Avery: You have proved nothing, Alex. You have proved that you are a scared man. A scared champion. And someone that cannot rest on their skills. If you WERE better than me, you’d fight a fair fight. Cheating to win is a cop out. True champions do not need to cheat to win… they do not need to use hurdles to slow down the competition. When I am champion, I will NOT hide from any challenge. I will not deter anyone from fighting me for the title. I will be a fighting champion, Alex. I will not use it as a prop. It may not mean much to you… but to me… I means so much.
*With that, Avery heads out of the room and closes the door behind him as it latches*
