‘When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change’
Scarlett headed down the street she once new… the home she once lived in... the garden she once played in.
She had flashbacks of her mother, and how they once played together. Happy memories but sad thoughts, she tightly gripped the necklace hanging around neck and planted a kiss on it as a tear glistened down her cheek.
A child and her mother walked down the path and unlocked the home she once knew. Scarlett knew there was no going back. No way she could head back to her father's house, the hell house.
She turned to leave, looking back at the house she once knew. She wiped her cheek, brushed herself off and walked away.
Scarlett opened her purse to find $58 she saved from her Saturday cleaning job she once did.
She headed to the local gym, bought a membership with the little money she had. She had a different outlook on the world now. All she saw was black. There was no light in this life. Nothing had served her well. She gripped onto the bench handles, pulling her body up, her muscles aching, she pushed through the pain. Her hate for her father drove her through the pain. She continuously pulled herself up on the handles.
A local trainer came across
Trainer: Miss, are you ok?
Scarlett: I'm fine! Mind your own fucking business!
She let out a sob as a tear dropped to the floor, she broke down. She had so much emotion.
Trainer: Miss are you sure?
The trainer pulled her in for a hug, but Scarlett pushed him back smacking him in the mouth.
Scarlett: get the fuck off me! I said I'm fine!
Trainer: Listen Miss, if you touch me again that will be a permanent ban and I'll have you down for assault!
Scarlett: DO WHAT THE FUCK YOU WANT, I COULDN'T CARE LESS!
Trainer: that's it miss, I need you to leave.
Scarlett: proudly, and do not call me miss!
Scarlett walked out of the gym and headed to the place she heard the ad was.
A tall muscular man stood leaning against the door with a cigarette in his hand, he took a long toke, the blew the smoke in Scarlett's face. He scanned Scarlett from head to toe and started to laugh.
Neil: ha! What are you here for? To waitress for us guys?
Scarlett stood furiously glaring at the man stood before her. She stared at the ground, twiddling her thumbs. She cleared her throat and spoke nervously.
Scarlett: Ermm.. I'm.. Ermm here to try out wrestling?.
Neil: YOU!? Really?
He said in a confident tone.
Neil: What can I do for you!?
He sniggered.
Scarlett: I'd like to fight, to try out in wrestling.
Scarlett answered nervously.
He held back his laugh
Neil: sure com’on in.
They stepped into the building. The walls were tall and the lights were bright. Neil showed Scarlett to the wrestling ring, she analysed the room, the chairs to the stadium were everywhere. She looked over to the ring, and ducked under the rope. She stood shifting her feet nervously looking down at the floor. She knew she had to try, to succeed in the challenge before her. Neil climbed under the rope and stood confidently leaning against the post.
Scarlett: Ok, I'm ready.
Scarlett brushed herself off, standing nervously.
Neil laughed hard
Neil: Are you serious? Little you, match against me!
A older man stepped out from the hall and into the stadium. He squinted his eyes and shouted.
Chris: Neil let the girl match you, let's see what she's got.
Scarlett stood with her head hung. Chris stood in the middle taking on the role as the Ref.
Chris: 3...2..1 Go!
Scarlett lunged towards Neil, punching him in the face. Neil winched and threw a punch back smashing her in the nose, blood trickled down her face as she wiped her nose, going in for a second punch. Neil ducked and swug a punch back, this time hitting Scarlett in the ear. She heard a loud ringing noise as she stood holding her head throwing her off balance, she then ran toward him and smacked him in the eye with a loud smack. He then climbed on top of her holding her hand behind her back. Scarlett struggled frantically as a tear rolled down her cheek.
She knew she had just potentially lost the chance to go into wrestling. Her only option to make something of herself and earn some money to get off the streets.
Chris: 1...2…3 tap out! The winner is Neil!
Scarlett stood up and brushed her body down, looking toward the floor embarrassed.
Neil stood up with a large grin on his face.
Neil: told you sweetheart, I knew you couldn't take ‘this down’.
He pointed his hands either side of his chest. Scarlett clenched her fists furiously. Tears flooring to the floor in frustration.
Chris: She did great. Did you see the punch she gave you? Look at your eye!.
Neil looked in the mirror to see his eye swollen, it had gone red in the iris from where Scarlett had popped a blood vessel in his eye and was completely closing up.
Scarlett stood furiously staring at the ground.
Chris: Scarlett I'd like to sign you up, with further training I think you'd do fantastic.
Scarlett lifted her head and looked at Chris.
Scarlett: Are you sure?
Chris: absolutely. Like I said, with further training you'd do great. Come drop by in the morning. We will start your training from there.
Scarlett: Sure! Thank you.
She headed towards the big exit doors as Neil shouted her back.
Neil: look forward to the rematch lady!.
Scarlett tensed her fists and swung the door open leaving the stadium.
