“Someone once told me to not take anyone for granted as you never know what's around the corner, for me this was incredibly true.”
'June 1999'
The sun was scorching down on the freshly mown lawn, the breeze gently blowing Sally's hair as she playfully chased young Scarlett around the yard, throwing water balloons at her.
Sally: Water fight!
Sally screamed as her daughter dodged another balloon, throwing one back at her mum which hit her in the face. Sally wiped her face as she shouted back at her daughter.
Sally: I'll get you for that!
Young Scarlett screamed as Sally picked her daughter up and gently swung her around as Scarlett giggled.
Scarlett: Put me down mum!
Amongst the water fight Sally’s phone started to ring, Scarlett looked over with a disappointed look on her face as the play fight had to stop. Eventually Sally picked up her phone and immediately looked depressed as she spots the caller ID.
Sally: Hi Dan, are you coming home this weekend?
Sally asked distantly as Scarlett jumps on the spot screaming
Scarlett: DADDY
Sally spoke in a disappointed tone
Sally: Dan, you promised, Please?
Scarlett's excitement immediately turned to sadness as she hung her head low biting her nail
Scarlett: Mummy, is Dad not coming again?
Sally replied in a disappointed tone
Sally: I'm sorry sweetie
Sally brushed a strand of hair behind Scarlett's ear. A tear glistened from Scarlett's eye and dropped to the floor, Scarlett walked away and headed upstairs shutting the door behind her
Her body pressed against the door and she slouched down the door sitting on the floor with her knees in her hands. She let out a big sigh beginning to sob uncontrollably
Scarlett: Does daddy not care for me? Why does he only care for stupid Courtney, his favourite daughter
Scarlett thought as Sally tapped on the door
Sally: Scarlett, sweetie I made you a hot chocolate with extra marshmallows, I'm sorry about your dad.
Speaking through the door Scarlett at the tender age of 7 began to question her mum as to why she hadn't seen her dad in over a year, a speechless Sally didn't know how to react to the question.
Sally: Scarlett sweetie he's just busy. He'll come next week he promised.
A doubtful Scarlett opened her bedroom door a jar.
Scarlett: Ok mum.
Scarlett spoke in a confident voice to appear strong. Sally walked into Scarlett's room sitting on her bed and placed her hot chocolate on her bedside table then gently stroked Scarlett's hair pulling her into an embrace. Scarlett forced a smile on her face and kisses her mum on the forehead
Scarlett: I love you mum
Sally: I love you too Scarrly
'December 2005'
It was Christmas Eve and Scarlett was wrapping the present she had brought for her mum with her savings from her weekly pocket money, a necklace that read 'a mother is not only a mum, but a best friend' in the form of a love heart locket, inside was a photograph of Scarlett and her mum smiling at the camera. She was overjoyed as she placed this under the Christmas tree and wrote in big letters 'to the world's best mum' on it.
Sally was already tucked up in bed so Scarlett made her a hot drink and carried it to her bed, placing it on the bedside table.
Scarlett: Mum I made you a cuppa before bed, I hope you like it.
Her mum smiled her eyes were sunken and her face looked exhausted as she thanked Scarlett and pulled her in for a cuddle and kiss goodnight.
Sally: Goodnight sweetie, I love you.
Scarlett: I love you too mum
Scarlett replied as she walked into the Hall and turned out the lights climbing into her own bed.
The next morning the sun rose as scarlett rubbed her eyes, she could hear her mum in the other room coughing so she went to see if everything was alright.
Scarlett: Mum are you ok?
Scarlett asked as Sally wiped her mouth swilling the sink out, Scarlett peaked over her shoulder and noticed blood in the sink, in shock Scarlett didn't ask why.
Ding dong, the doorbell rang as Scarlett rushed down stairs with a glimmer of hope in her eye expecting it to be her father, as she opened the door her aunt Claire was on the other side
Claire: Scarlett! Good gosh have you grown! Where is your mother?
Scarlett: She's upstairs
Explained Scarlett, Aunt Claire pushed past her rushing up the stairs, Scarlett heard whispers coming from upstairs.
She decided to listen as she gently creeped up the stairs listening in, her heart sank when she heard the next words come out aunt Claire's mouth
Claire: Lung cancer? This can't be true!
Tears dropped from Sally's eyes as she sobbed into her sister's arms
Sally: what am I going to do Claire, what about Scarlett? She needs me!
A tear glistened from Scarlett's eyes as she let out a sob, Sally looked up as her heart sank at the thought of her little girl hearing this
Sally: Scarlett?
Shouted Sally. Scarlett took at deep breath and tried to appear strong for her mum
Scarlett: Yes mum?
She asked calmly
Sally: Nothing dear.
Scarlett sat on the couch trying to process all that she just heard, she was in deep shock. She sat, quietly sobbing and praying for the best outcome.
Sally and Claire came down with a smile on their faces, Claire prepped the turkey as though nothing happened.
Scarlett wiped her tears away as she picked up her mum's present and gave it to her in the neatly wrapped up parcel
Sally smiled from ear to ear as she opened it, she stood staring at what her daughter had got her and analyzed every detail, the doctor's words echoing in her ears 'I'm sorry miss Selcis, it's terminal' she let out a loud sob as she pulled her daughter into an embrace squeezing her tightly almost as if she was saying goodbye.
Scarlett held onto her mum no longer being able to hold back she sobbed uncontrollably and clung to her mum.
Scarlett: I love you so much mum
Scarlett sobbed
Sally: I love you too sweetie
Sally exhaled.
Within that moment Sally collapsed to the ground with a thud, Scarlett dived on top of her screaming to Claire to phone 911. Scarlett's heart sank as she gave her mum mouth to mouth trying to recover her, feeling her pulse there was no heartbeat, Scarlett pounded down on her mother's chest sobbing.
The ambulance arrived in what felt like hours as Scarlett went by her mum's side, waiting in the hospital sat on the chair with her head in her hands Scarlett already knew the news, her heart felt numb, she was completely emotionless.
Claire sat by her side gently rubbing Scarlett's back. The doctor came out with a sad look on his face and confirmed her worst fears.
That day she lost her best friend, her better self, her mother.
Scarlett sat emotionless staring at her feet, taking in all that had just happened, clenching onto the necklace she had given her mum, her eyes were blurred as tears glistened falling to her feet, in the corner of her eye she could see a silhouette of a broad muscley man walking toward her.
Unknown: i've come to pick up the kid, Claire
The voice was familiar, scarlett looked up rubbing her eyes to see her father standing before her.
Scarlett: Dad?
Scarlett questioned
Dan completely ignored his daughter's question and spoke directly to Aunt Claire who was sitting beside her.
Dan: Claire pass me her bags, i need to take Courtney to her ballet lesson I don't have time for this.
Claire's jaw dropped
Claire: How can you just walk into her life after all these years and expect her to go with you?
Dan: Claire love, this isn't through any choice of my own I just have my fucking name on that damn birth certificate!
Claire pulled Scarlett into an embrace and repeatedly said
Claire: I'm sorry
Claire let go of her grip and turned around exiting out of the hospital, just like that.
Scarlett stood, emotionless, empty as she had never felt so alone in her entire life.
She felt a gentle tug on her top, she turned to see a young girl looking up at her with pigtails in her hair, a smile from ear to ear
Courtney: Scarrly, I’m Courtney! Daddy said some bad words about you, but i think your cool.
Scarlett stood examining the girl's face, she couldn't help but feel… envious towards Courtney. Flashbacks appeared in Scarlett's mind about how her mum used to call her Scarrly. Courtney turned to Scarlett full of excitement.
Courtney: I'm 5 tomorrow, how old are you Scarrly?
Scarlett cleared her throat
Scarlett: I'm 12
Courtney: You seem sad Scarrly.
Scarlett wiped her eyes and hugged the young girl. After all she was the only person who seemed to care right now, a young 5 year old.
Dan grabbed Scarlett by the arm and hissed
Dan: Come on!, time to go!.
Scarlett hung her head low as she had no other choice but to go with what felt like a unknown family, she hadn't seen or heard from her father in SEVEN LONG YEARS.
Scarlett hopped into the back seat of the family jeep. She buckled her belt and let out a long sigh looking down at her toes.
‘December 2010’
“Time is like a river, you cannot touch the same water twice, because the flow that passed will never pass again.”
Scarlett awoke to the excited screams of her sister's voice
Courtney: IT'S CHRISTMAS
Scarlett rolled over facing the window, her bed springs digging into her back as she pulled the cover over her mouth.
Scarlett hated this time of year as it reminded her of her mum. She wrapped her hand around the necklace, hugging it tightly.
Dan opened the door looking in to the moisture from the window dripping on the windowsill, mold began to grow from the dampness and a cold breeze filled the room.
Dan: Get up kid, get cooking dinner
Scarlett climbed out of bed and walked down the stairs doing as her father commanded. She stood stirring the vegetables as Courtney ran in the kitchen screaming.
Courtney: I got a PS3! Wow!!
Scarlett dished up Christmas dinner and set the table.
As she sat shuffling her sprout around the dinner plate, Dan walked over to the table with a slice of bread and dropped it onto Scarlett's plate.
Dan: That's yours, THIS IS OURS!
Her father roared. Scarlett's body stiffened up as she picked up the piece of bread stuffing it into her mouth, a tear glistening in the corner of her eye.
‘October 2011’
Scarlett stood chopping vegetables as she gazed at the television in front of her, an ad came on about how to start a wrestling career and the wage kept ringing in her ears $2 million per annual year.
She imagined a life she could lead on that kind of money, imagined that she could get away from this hell hole.
Dan: Scarlett! My dinner better be ready in 3...2….1
Scarlett plated her father's dinner as fast as she could and ran towards the living room, as she did so she tripped over the rug as the food flew into her father's face.
Dan: YOU'VE HAD IT NOW!
Her father roared
Scarlett frantically shifted back towards the wall and held her arms around her head protecting her face, suddenly it was like a switch flipped. Scarlett has finally been pushed too far, she had enough.
Scarlett stood up and grabbed her father's hand crushing his fist
Dan: You little bitch!
Her father roared
Scarlett kneed her father in the privates causing him to fall to the ground she let all her anger out as she continuously kicked her father in the side of the ribs. She spat on him as she looked down at his fallen body.
Scarlett: IF YOU EVER TOUCH ME AGAIN, I WILL KILL YOU. THATS A FUCKING PROMISE!
Just like that Scarlett strutted out the house slamming the door behind her, leaving her old life in her past.
