005 * Throwback
Scene 001 - Indio Middle School - Indio, CA - Fall 2006 - FLASHBACK
*Avery Miles and Zoe Sanderson are walking into the lunchroom. School has been in session for a couple of weeks and their budding friendship has been going on for some time now. Zoe would eventually become Zoe Miles but for now they were just friends. Seventh grade has gone well for Avery so far, and much of that he has to thank Zoe for. Her parents were a bit on the free spirited side sending their daughter to school with a fresh lunch including plenty of greens and berries. Avery was lucky enough to buy lunch, whatever it would be that day; burgers, pizza, chicken, or maybe even the amazing spaghetti that the school served. Today was a burritos, and Avery always made sure to get an extra one for Zoe because she would end up eating half of his food anyways. He did not mind it though. As they walked into the lunchroom to find a table, an unfamiliar face was sitting at a nearby table alone. The blonde haired girl stuck out a bit in the lunchroom; she was dressed quite fashionably with beautiful blue eyes. She was not eating anything and sort of scanned the room trying to take it all in. She was obviously new and looking to find her place, but as the school year was a few weeks in many of the cliques were already forming or completed*
Zoe: Ave… who is she?
*He shrugs*
Avery: I don’t know? She looks new.
Zoe: I haven’t seen her around, I wonder if she just started?
Avery: Weeks into the year? Kind of weird, I guess.
Zoe: I wonder if anyone is sitting with her?
Avery: Well if not, they are now.
*Avery grabs Zoe by the hand and leads her towards the table with the blonde girl. Avery swoops in with a bit of thunder as he crashes down onto the seat across from her. Zoe follows his lead but sits down much quieter and easier. The girl is a bit startled, but immediately takes to the two of them*
Avery: Hi, I’m Avery. This is Zoe.
Zoe: Hello.
Avery: Anyone sitting here?
*The blond shakes her head ‘no’ clutching a stack of books*
Avery: Good, because we are now.
*The girl nods and begins to leave the table*
Avery: Wait! Where are you going?
Blonde: Don’t you want the table?
Avery: Well, yes. But with you. We were coming to sit with you.
Blonde: Oh, okay.
*The blonde smiles as she puts her books down on the table*
Avery: Not eating today?
Zoe: Avery!
Avery: What?
Blonde: No, I’m not really hungry.
Zoe: Nevermind him. Boys!
*The two girls share a laugh*
Blonde: My name’s Taylor.
Zoe: Very nice to meet you Taylor, are you new here?
Taylor: Yes. My parents just moved here. My dad got some new job and we had to leave Washington.
Zoe: Oh, I’m so sorry.
*Taylor tries to hold back, but the two of them can tell that she is upset*
Avery: Well Zoe and I were looking for another friend, and anytime she wants to go shopping you can make that easier on me. Whaddya say?
*Zoe punches Avery’s shoulder as Taylor chokes up a laugh, and wipes a tear*
Taylor: Sure. I would love that.
Zoe: It’s settled. After school, the year of Zoe, Taylor, and Avery begins!
Avery: Wait, why am I last?
Zoe: Ladies are always first, Ave.
Avery: I guess so. Whatever. I am NOT going shopping though.
Zoe: Too bad, we are going to the mall after school.
*Avery places his forehead on the table as Taylor relaxes and begins to laugh even more*
Taylor: The mall sounds nice.
Zoe: Good. Meet near the flagpole after school. It’s not too far, we can walk.
*The three of them smile and continue their conversation until the bell rings for the end of their lunch. They head towards their classes only to meet up after school and enjoying the first of many days together. Forever known as “The Trio”, the three of them were inseparable until the day Zoe had to move away*
Scene 002 - Seattle Children's Hospital - Seattle, WA - May 5th, 2016
*Avery Miles III is sitting on a stool with a group of about twenty children in front of them. Some have street clothes on, others are in hospital gowns. Different stages of sickness, they are united by their love of reading and for just a short time they forget that many of them won’t make it much longer*
Avery: ...a tweetle beetle noodle poodle bottled paddled muddled duddled fuddled wuddled fox in socks, sir! Fox in socks, our game is done, sir. Thank you for a lot of fun, sir.
*With that, Avery closes the book and smiles to the children. They cheer and clap as a couple of them run up to him offering hugs, while the rest see and make their way to their feet. A huge group hug as Avery tries to keep it together. He looks over to the on-duty nurse as she can tell that he is equally loving this moment as well as working through his own loss. Alycia had made this event for Avery as he was going to soon be a father, and giving back was important to him. Not wanting to back out, he put on a brave face and went through with it.*
Nurse: Alright everybody, we need to let Mr. Avery get back!
Children: Thank you Mr. Avery!
Avery: You are all very, very welcome!
*The children, all smiles, head out as they leave with passing waves goodbye. The nurse mouths “thank you” as Avery places the book on the table and heads out of the room and down the hall. Barely keeping it together, he gets an alert on his phone reminding him that he was to be in Las Vegas for Tuesday Night Tenacity. Realizing that the date is coming up so fast, he needs to cut a promo for the show. Avery heads outside of the hospital and across the entrance to a couple of benches right outside of a parking lot, takes a seat, and pulls his cell phone out*
Avery: This is not the week for me, but what am I to do? Fold up like an accordion? Or do I continue along full steam ahead? I am in the belief that if you allow things to be negative and wear you down, that nothing will get better. I have been to dark places, and I was close to ending it all. I know that my own issues are being taken care of thanks to a monthly doctor visit and a bottle of medication, but that does not mean that I don’t take loss hard. Nor does it mean that I can’t step up and truck forward with my career. Am I torn up over the way things happened as Uprising? No doubt about it. But what does that loss mean for me in a week where I lose three things that matter most to me? Pretty much nothing. But that does not mean next week will be the same?
*Avery gives a wicked half-smile*
Avery: I am not happy… I am pissed off… and fucking tired of the so-called ownership of this company allowing these matches to end with costing me my win. I fight my ass off, and I thought that I was signing with a top notch promotion; maybe I need to keep my skills in companies that actually want real talent. It took Landon’s sister and some dude to give him the win… plus your top champion, Alex Jones, is both the owner’s boy toy AND someone that cannot win on his own. How sad is it that a company employes people that lack so much talent that they need to cheat to win and hold onto titles. Seeing as though Alex is protected by his wifey boss, why should I even waste my time here? I have never given up yet, and I don’t plan on doing so. I am going to keep coming at them. I am going straight for Alex. And the VWS World Championship will become mine. Both Ana and Alex can write those words down, because it is only a matter of time.
*Avery shows zero emotion on his face; a different Avery than what has been seen in Valentine Wrestling Syndicate so far*
Avery: I am going to take everything they throw at me, and from here on out, I am going to destroy it; beginning with Cable Arcane. The guy who has a name like he is an X-Men bad guy and is just as generic. He came out at Uprising and put everyone on notice. Check. He does not care about the fans. Check. He challenges people that are not signed talent. Check. He is ready to tear down the heroes. Check.
A straight hard hitter, this guy has his own little motto; “No Sleep. No Rest.” Even though that it is physically impossible to never sleep, I will go along with it just for the fun, but this chump just oozes of generic badassery. I mean, what is really different about him that we haven’t seen anywhere else in the country? He is better than you, and will kick you ass. No one is Cable Arcane! Grrrr!
*Avery laughs to himself*
Avery: Let’s keep this simple… for you Cable, you decided to join VWS at the wrong fucking time. I am not in a mood to play games and I hope that you are ready to quit like a bitch. I am not going to be uttering those words, and if anything, I plan on inflicting my own will upon you. The pain that I have had to bear over the last week… nothing like the pain that you will feel. We are days away from Tenacity, and it is already too late for you. Make sure to practice saying those two words because you will definitely be saying them by the time that I am done with you. I will make you scream those words, and when your cries echo through the arena I want to make sure that Alex Jones pays close attention. I am on the warpath and I am coming after him.
How convenient is it that I am being relegated to fighting the next big bad man that Ana has to offer. Watch the match closely… he will be put down just like anyone else that stands in my way.
*He stares directly into the camera*
I heard what Cable had to say, and I know that someone with his mentality will try to call be out for going through my own losses. Surely he is a bigger man, stronger, and I am distracted so he won’t have my full attention. He is sadly mistaken because of everything going on, I am even more focused. I have nothing to lose that I haven’t lost already. I am a man without an endgame, and he is the unlucky son of a bitch that was booked against me. There is no comparison between Cable and myself, and I wouldn’t doubt that after I make him quit like the little bitch that he really is, he up and quits the company. So keep throwing them at me Ana, because your hubby is at the top of my list and he is who I am aiming for.
*Avery stands up as an ambulance rolls into the ER entrance*
VWS needs a real talent to lead the company, and I am the only man for the job. If it takes going against the boss and her pussy whipped husband, then so be it; I’ve been the underdog in plenty of fights and this is no different. It is only a matter of time before we see a rise up. I will lead the charge. I will bring a balance to this company. And I will do whatever it takes...
Scene 003 - Renaissance Seattle Hotel - Seattle, WA - May 6th, 2016
*We open as Avery Miles III is sitting back on the dark blue colored couch. In front of him on the table is his phone and a brand new bottle of whiskey. Avery was recently diagnosed as having bi-polar disorder and has been on medication for some time now. Mixing alcohol and the medicine is not something that should be done but for Avery, all of that is out of the window. Avery just stares at the bottle. The last time he drank, it did not end well. He has recovered for that time, but he does not know what to do. He reaches for the bottle, and opens it with a “pop”. He grabs a glass and begins to pour the whiskey into a glass. Placing the bottle down, he holds the glass and swirls the whiskey around. He places it back on the table just mulling it over. A deep breath. His cell phone buzzes as an unknown number. He pushes the glass aside and grabs the phone*
Avery: Hello?
Voice: Avery?
Avery: Taylor?
Taylor: Avery… I’m in big trouble….
*Avery remains on the phone for some time. Having a back and forth conversation with Taylor. It has been months since they had talked, which was at Zoe’s funeral. Taylor and Zoe had kept in touch after Taylor moved back to Washington to live with her grandmother. She had a little girl a couple of years ago; Brooklyn was her name. Taylor had gotten herself into trouble and had no place to go, and the only person she thought to call was Avery. He happened to be in town for NGW vs IPW in Seattle. After giving her the name and address of the hotel that he was staying at he made sure that the room was cleaned up and straightened. He put away the bottle of whiskey and his medication. He quickly ran to the bathroom and cleaned himself up. It had only been four days since the loss of the twins and three since Alycia made her decision; he was not in the right frame of mind but he definitely was always there for friends. He pulled himself together and sat on the couch, just waiting for her to show up. He made sure to stay in contact with her via text, giving her the room number and telling her to just come up to the room. He was nervous about seeing her again as it would easily bring back memories of Zoe, but because while his life was falling apart he had to be there for a friend. This was not an option; Avery was raised for be the rock for the ones he loved and cared for, friends and family alike. He had to be there for whatever Taylor was wrapped up in.*
Avery: Relax Avery… just breathe….
*A knock at the door. Avery gets up and checks to make sure that the room is decent. He makes sure that the bed is made, and his clothes are clean and straight. He heads to the door taking in a deep breath and opens the door.In front of him was not a sight he was expecting. Wide blue eyes, one of which was healing with a yellowing bruise. In her arms is the body of a small child, it's face hidden by a halo of golden curls identical to her mother. It's obviously by her dead weight that she's fast asleep. The only luggage the woman has is a knapsack on her back. She offers Avery a lopsided smile*
Taylor: Hi Ave.
